Thief Pretending to Shop for His Wife Steals Two Purses, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — A man who claimed he was shopping for his wife stole two $1,400 handbags from a Park Slope boutique on April 13, according to a police report.

A store employee buzzed the man into Eleven Consignment on Fifth Avenue near St. Mark's Place about 11:15 a.m. He claimed he was looking for something for his wife.

But as soon as his accomplice showed up, he swiped two floral bags by German leather goods designer MCM from the store's front window display and ran off to a waiting U-haul van, according to a report. The boutique was also robbed in January.

Other notable crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with all details drawn from police reports:

► A mugger punched a man in the face and stole his wallet on April 18 at 2:15 a.m. The 32-year-old victim was sitting outside smoking a cigarette near President Street and Fifth Avenue when the mugger approached him and said "F--- you" before hitting him and taking his property. Video cameras on Fifth Avenue caught the crime, but not arrests had been made as of Thursday.

► Two burglars swiped $3,300 in property from a third-floor apartment on 15th Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues on April 16 between 10:15 a.m. and 6:10 p.m. The thieves broke in through a locked front door and took a ruby and diamond necklace, an iPad mini, a social security card, an expired U.S. passport, and a birth certificate.

► A $779 Jamis bike was stolen from the basement of an apartment building on Sixth Street between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West on April 11.

► A 20-year-old woman who accidentally took a Q train to Brooklyn from 34th Street on April 18 at 1:10 a.m. fell asleep during the ride and woke up at the Seventh and Flatbush avenues stop to find that someone had stolen her purse out of her lap.

► A MacBook Air laptop was stolen from an acupuncture business on Union Street and Eighth Avenue while the proprietor was with a client on April 14 about 9 a.m.

Overall, major crimes in the 78th Precinct have dropped 2 percent this year compared with the same period in 2014, according to the latest NYPD statistics.
