6 Things for You To Do in New York City's Neighborhoods This Weekend

Friday, April 24
A Night of Philosophy is a 12-hour nocturnal happening taking place in the French Embassy’s beautiful Albertine bookshop and cultural services department inside the historic Payne Whitney mansion on Fifth Avenue. From 7 p.m. Friday evening through to 7 a.m. Saturday morning, hear talks with 61 philosophers on issues such as freedom of speech, “Can you decide to believe in God?,” and “Must intellectual life be Boring?” Enjoy 12 artistic performances with Eve Bailey, Trisha Bauman and Julien Bismuth; a marathon reading of Marquis de Sade’s "Philosophy in the Boudoir," and a selection of video screenings and much more. With Tax Day in the rearview, many of us have vowed to never be so disorganized with our finances again. The Financial Planning Day at the Science, Industry and Business Library is not only an expansive line-up of classes and demonstrations, you’ll also have the opportunity to receive free 30 minute financial, credit crisis or Medicare counseling sessions with experts from the Financial Planning Association of New York. Financial Planning Day features 12 classes on a variety of financial and life issues, including investing basics, wills and advance directives and a home buyer workshop. Check the full program here. Saturday, April 25
The Department of Parks & Recreation’s annual Street Games festival returns to East Harlem on Saturday. Relive the classic street games from New York City’s past: stickball, double-dutch, roller blading, street hockey, hula hooping, wheelchair basketball and more. There will be skateboarding and cycling lessons (BYO bike), a soap box derby and performances from the Dance Theater of Harlem. Thomas Jefferson Park, 114th Street and First Avenue, East Harlem. From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Free.

The Tribeca Family Festival is an annual street fair aligned with the Tribeca Film Festival. Along Greenwich Avenue in Tribeca from 10 a.m. Saturday you'll find a broad selection of activities, performances and experiences, including the Tribeca Studios Backlot, live chef demonstrations, kite flying, performances from current Broadway shows, an arts and crafts pavilion and free video games. Families can also attend a free screening of "Back To The Future" from 6 p.m. There’s also an “Enchantment Under The Sea” dance party and an opportunity to take a picture with the time-traveling DeLorean, Marty McFly’s souped-up pickup truck and many more artifacts from the movie. The 7th annual World Conservation Society Run for the Wild is taking place Saturday at Bronx Zoo. It’s a 5K Run and Family Fun Run/Walk in support of the World Conservation Society work to help save gorillas. After the run, check out the world’s largest urban zoo, featuring more than 600 species from around the globe. From 8 a.m. at Bronx Zoo, 2300 Southern Blvd., Bronx. All adult participants are required to raise at least $30 to participate, and all-day zoo admission is included.

Sunday, April 26
"Awaken Your Practice” presented by Yoga Journal Events, brings together some of the biggest names in American yoga including Rodney Yee, Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, Elena Brower and Dharma Mittra for a long weekend (Thursday April 23 to Monday April 27) of yoga related activities. Sunday’s free activities include “Raise Your Vibe: Kundalini Sadhana with Carolana Dimopoulos” from 5 a.m. and a “Morning Meditation with Coral Brown” from 7 a.m. The Yoga Market is also free and open to the public from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
