How to Celebrate Earth Day in NYC

NEW YORK CITY — Whether you're going on an evening walk to check on the frog population, getting your hands dirty by planting seeds or sitting in on a documentary about environmental leaders, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Earth Day in NYC this Wednesday. 

Here are just a few of the city's Earth Day activities: 

Learn How to Plant Seeds and Cook Foraged Food in Bed-Stuy
Hattie Carthan Herban Farm in Bed-Stuy will hold several free workshops throughout the day, teaching participants how to plant seeds, cook foraged food from the garden and sift through compost. The workshops will start at 11 a.m. and will end around 6 p.m. when participants are invited to bring their instruments to play together, the garden’s farmer Yonnette Fleming said. 
Price: Free
Time: from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Location: 49 Van Buren St.

Watch a documentary and attend a panel discussion about green architect Jens Jensen at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx
Jen Jensen is a Danish-American landscape architect who is known for his "prairie style" designs. He mainly worked on designing Chicago parks in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the environmental activist is acknowledged as an early supporter of neighborhood parks, community gardens and sustainable design, organizers said. You can watch the documentary trailer here. The discussion panel, which will take place after the screening, will cover Jensen’s feedback on today’s environmental issues.
Price: $19 for Non-Members, $15 for members and $10 for full-time students (student ID required at the door).  Participants can register online but walk-ins are also accepted.
Time: Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the screening will start at 6:30 p.m.
Location: New York Botanical Garden is located at 2900 Southern Blvd. in the Bronx.

Learn how to take care of street trees in the Lower East Side
The free workshop will teach participants how to aerate the soil in street trees’ pits and apply compost to help keep the soil in good health. Gardening tools will be provided but volunteers must come in clothes they can dig in. There will be a happy hour after the event at Eastwood bar at 200 Clinton St.
Price: Free but participants should register online.
Time: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Location: Meet at 4 p.m. in front of the Manny Cantor Center at 197 E. Broadway. 

Observe Frogs in High Rock Park in Staten Island
Go on a frog watching trip in High Rock Park and listen for the calls of local frogs. Participants must be at least 8 years old and must bring a flashlight or headlamp for the two-hour night walk. Newcomers can also learn from volunteers who will monitor the amphibian populations by recording the frogs’ sounds.
Price: Free but participants must register by phone 718-351-3450 or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org.
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Meet at High Rock Park Main Gate, located at 200 Nevada Avenue in Staten Island. 

Learn how fashion, food and urban design industries can be sustainable at The New School 
The New School's Tishman Environment and Design Center is hosting a day-long event featuring several workshops, pop-up classes and discussions on sustainability and climate actions. The first talk, at 10 a.m., will cover sustainable fashion and will include guests such as Nicole Wilson, the director of US corporate responsibility for Tommy Hilfiger.  Those who attend the the Food for Thought discussion at 12 p.m will be served a sustainably sourced meal. DJ Spooky will conclude the event with a live performance around 6 p.m.
Price:  All workshops are free but participants should register online.
Time: Workshops run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
