Earth Day is celebrated every April 22 with events demonstrating support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries annually. Locally, the Earth Day 5K Walk & Green Tour offers a chance for volunteers, individuals and corporate groups to visit green sites around New York City. Among the eco-friendly spaces where the tour makes stops are a green skyscraper, a waterway cleanup site and a rooftop farm. All proceeds will go to Earth Day New York's community-based and year-round environmental education programs.
