GREENWICH VILLAGE — Detectives are looking for a man they say followed a 24-year-old woman into an elevator, pulled a gun on her and demanded she bring him to her apartment so he could rob her, police said.

The man accosted the woman in an elevator at 78 Fifth Ave. on April 7 about 8:45 p.m., police said.

She told the man she did not live in that building, police said. The man responded by ordering the victim to follow him to an ATM, take out cash, and give it to him.

The man dragged the woman out of the building, clutching her by the hand while he tried to hail a taxi, police said.

But as a taxi pulled up to the curb, the woman broke free of the man's grasp and ran into a nearby store, police said.

Police said the suspect took off running.

Detectives obtained video of the suspect and are asking the public for assistance tracking him down.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
