EAST HARLEM — Police are looking for a man they say followed a woman into the elevator of an apartment building, dragged her to the stairwell and tried to rape her.

The incident happened at the 12th floor of the apartment building on Third Avenue in East Harlem about 4:40 a.m. on March 25, police said.

The 19-year-old victim fought off the would-be rapist. The suspect stole her phone before leaving the stairwell, police said.

He was caught on surveillance video exiting the apartment building. The NYPD released the video Tuesday night.

He is described as 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds. He wore a red hooded sweatshirt with a black jacket over it, blue jeans and red sneakers.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call 1 800 577 8477.
