QUEENS – A Forest Hills yoga studio is offering a workshop called the "gong bath" where participants lie listening to the sound of a ringing gong for about an hour.

Gong master Kevin Wadalavage will be hitting a 42-inch-wide gong with various mallets, creating a harmony of sounds, said Suzanne Scholten, owner of BambooMoves Yoga Studio, which is holding the event on April 19.

“It’s is like a bath of music and because it's on a vibrational level you actually hear it through your body," Scholten said. "You benefit from it because the vibrations and the music is shaking you."

For centuries, gongs have been used in rituals, meditation and for therapeutic purposes. The April 19 workshop is the first time the studio is offering a class focused on the mighty instrument, but it's recently been organizing a number of music workshops and events because "sounds are very healing," she said.

Earlier this month, the studio held a concert of Indian classical music featuring flute and tabla players.

“It’s almost like your internal organs shake because of the vibration,” she added. “That gentle little shake is like a massage.”

The "gong bath" workshop is scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m. Space is limited to 25 people. The class is free for BambooMoves members and $10 for non-members. BambooMoves Yoga Studio is located at 107-40 Queens Blvd. Suite 206, Forest Hills.
