NEW SPRINGVILLE — The planned redevelopment and expansion of the Staten Island Mall will add a Fairway Market and movie theater to the site by 2017, a spokesman for the mall said.

The proposed 427,000 square-foot expansion will add restaurants, more stores, a public piazza for events like farmers markets, a 53,000 square-foot movie theater and the first Fairway Market in the borough.

"The redevelopment is the latest in a series of job-creating projects coming to Staten Island," said Borough President James Oddo.

"We are particularly excited to welcome Fairway Market, which will give us even more grocery options. From the North Shore to the South Shore, East Shore to the West, economic development is happening throughout Staten Island.”

Aside from new shops, the project will also upgrade the interior and exterior of the mall, create 1,300 permanent jobs and add $300 million in economic activity to the borough, said David Albertson, a spokesman for mall owner General Growth Properties.

The details of the plan were first reported by NY1.

The project needs approvals from the city before construction can start because the mall plans to cut 347 parking spaces with the expansion, according to plans filed with the city.

If approved, construction is expected to start in 2015 and be completed in 2017.
