CHELSEA — A Massachusetts man assaulted a PATH train conductor and tried to steal his keys before ripping off his shirt and fleeing the scene early Friday morning, the Port Authority Police Department said.
Joseph Cannon, 24, of Lowell, Mass., was arguing with conductor Bryan Martin at the 14th Street station about 4 a.m., when he tried to grab his keys, PAPD spokeswoman Lenis Rodrigues said.
Cannon then removed his shirt and fled the scene, according to Rodrigues.
PAPD officers spotted Cannon running shirtless on Park Avenue shortly after and chased him, catching him near Union Square, officials said.
Cannon was arrested for assault and attempted robbery, the Port Authority said. He was still awaiting arraignment Friday afternoon, prosecutors said.
It was not clear what precipitated the assault charge.
Martin was treated by EMS at the scene, but refused further medical attention, officials said.
The incident caused PATH trains to be delayed from around 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., Rodrigues said.
