SOUTH WILLIAMSBURG — A pedestrian plaza in South Williamsburg will soon be spruced up with more permanent fixtures, including planting beds, a concession kiosk and a performance space.

The George B. Post Plaza at Bedford Avenue and Broadway — currently known for its bright yellow umbrellas and views of the Williamsburg bridge — will be revamped starting summer 2016, according to the Department of Transportation.

Three plant beds and two seating areas will be added to the triangle to the east of South Sixth Street, while one permanent seating wall will be added to the triangle south of South Sixth Street, preliminary designs show.

Moveable tables and chairs will still be available, and more trees will be planted. A striped pavement pattern will be added to the ground to distinguish the plaza. A space will also be available for "small-scale performances," according to the plan.

Community Board 1's transportation committee approved the preliminary design as long as the DOT looked into the placement of the bike racks and agreed to not add permanent seating structures before construction begins, said Karen Nieves, the committee's chair.

Nieves said that the board had not heard complaints about the plaza. The full board voted to approve the preliminary designs.

The design will be reviewed in April and completed in winter 2015 and 2016. Construction will start in summer 2016 and be finished in 2017.
