Service Changes Planned for 11 Subway Lines This Weekend, MTA Says

NEW YORK CITY — With another Friday comes another weekend of mystery for subway riders, as the MTA's planned service changes reroutes some trains, switches between local and express service, and cuts out some service all together.

The changes are all part of a bigger, broader plan to upgrade and maintain the city’s aging subway infrastructure, the MTA said.

Here's what to expect:

1 train:

Northbound 1 trains will run express between 96 Street and 137 Street from 11:45 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday. If you need to get off at any of the stations in between, you’ll have to ride north until 137th Street and then hop over to the southbound track. If you’re trying to get on from on ride the train south and switch to an uptown train at 96th.

1 trains also running express on the southbound track between Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street until 215th Street starting at 3:45 a.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday. Use the Bx9 bus instead.

1 trains will run every 16 minutes north from 137th Street from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and also on 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday. The last stop for some northbound 1 trains is 137th Street and you may have to transfer to another subway car that is traveling the full route.

4 train:

Brooklyn-bound 4 trains will run local between 125th Street and Grand Central-42 St, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday until 5 a.m. on Monday.

Bronx-bound trains run express between 14th Street and Grand Central- 42nd Street starting at 11:45 p.m. Friday  until 6 a.m. Sunday and from 11:45 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

5 train:

5 trains won’t run in either direction between between Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and and East 180th Street, starting at 11:45 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Trains will run every 20 minutes between East 180th Street and Grand Central-42nd Street.

Free shuttle buses will run all weekend between Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and East 180th Street making stops the 4 train’s usual stops.  

5 trains are also stalled in either direction between 180th Street and 149th Street on Sunday from 7:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Straphangers can take the 2 instead.

Trains are also skipping 138th Street-Grand Concourse. Take the 4 instead.

Finally, southbound 5 trains will run local between 125th Street and Grand Central-42nd Street from 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday and from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

During those times 5 trains will run every 20 minutes.

6 train:

Bronx-bound 6 trains run express between 14 Street-Union Square to Grand Central Station starting at 11:45 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

Brooklyn Bridge-bound trains will run express between Parkchester and Hunts Point Avenue on Saturday at 6:45 a.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday.

6 trains don’t stop at Zerega Avenue or Buhre Avenue until Spring. Use Bx4, Bx8 or Bx24 buses instead.

7 train:

7 trains won’t run between Times Square-42nd Street and Hunters Point Avenue from 2:15 a.m. Saturday until 4:30 a.m. on Monday. Use the E, F, N or Q trains for service between Manhattan and Queens.

Free buses will run between Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue and Queensboro Plaza, with stops at Hunters Point Avenue, Court Square and Queens Plaza.

Eastbound 7 trains run express from Queensboro Plaza and 74th Street-Broadway starting at 3:45 a.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday. To get to any of the stations in between you’ll have to ride a eastbound train past your destination then switch tracks.

A train:

Northbound A trains run express from Canal Street to 59 Street-Columbus Circle starting at 11:45 p.m. Friday until 6:30 a.m. Sunday and from 11:45 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m Monday.

A trains won’t run in either directions between Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard and Rockaway Boulevard from 11:45 p.m. Friday until 5:00 a.m. Monday. Free shuttle buses will run along 80th Street.

During those times, eastbound A trains will skip the 88th Street stop, so riders can use the shuttle at 80th Street instead.

Eastbound A trains skip Rockaway Boulevard until the summer. Ride past the stop and switch to the west-bound track to get there.

C Train:

C trains run express from Canal Street to 59th Street-Columbus Circle starting at 6:30 a.m. Saturday until to 11 p.m. Sunday.

D Train:

D trains will run local in both directions between West 4th Street-Washington Square and 34th Street-Herald Square from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday.

Northbound D trains will run local between 36th Street and DeKalb Avenue starting at 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning.

E Train:

Queens-bound E trains run express from Canal Street to 34th Street-Penn Station from 11:45 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

F Train:

Trains heading to Jamaica skip 75th Avenue, Van Wyck Boulevard and Sutphin Boulevard from 10:45 p.m. F trains headed to Coney Island skip Avenue I, Avenue N and Avenue U starting at 11:45 p.m. Friday until 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

N train:

Queensbound N trains run local between Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn and Lexington Avenue-59th Street in Manhattan.

42nd Street Shuttle

The shuttle will operate overnight because of construction on the 7 train line. That’s between 12:01 a.m. on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Monday.
