MANHATTAN — Search crews hunting for a man who leaped from the Staten Island Ferry paused their search Thursday morning because tides were too strong, an NYPD spokesman said.

The man, who police said jumped into the New York Harbor as it approached Manhattan at about 6:50 a.m., was seen by rescue crews, but they lost sight of him again about 7:30 a.m., police said.

The search was halted at about 8:15 a.m. with plans to resume again when the tides calm at 10 a.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

The ferry was still running during the search operation but on a three-boat schedule, according to the Department of Transportation.
