NEW YORK CITY — If forecasters are right, Monday morning will bring the coldest Feb. 16 in New York City since 1888 as temperatures plummet to just 1 degree — with wind chills reaching 15 below zero.

Temperatures haven't sunk this low on any day since 2004, including last year's Polar Vortex.

The bone-numbing cold will follow another front making its way to the city Thursday night, meaning this weekend is set for some of the coldest days this winter.

Tim Morrin of the National Weather Service called the back-to-back cold fronts a "one-two punch."

"The wind chill temperatures that we’re anticipating... they're approaching very dangerous levels in which frostbite can occur in a very short amount of time," Morrin said.

On Friday, despite sunny skies, temperatures won't climb out of the teens.

Then, on Saturday, Morrin said, New Yorkers should be prepared for another "arctic surge."

Scattered snow flurries throughout the day Saturday will give way to another drop in temperatures. They'll reach their lowest point early Monday.

They'll slowly start to rise at the start of next week, making their way back into the 30s by Tuesday, Morrin said.
