Katz's Deli Customer Punched For Standing 'Too Close' in Line, Police Say

LOWER EAST SIDE — A woman waiting in line at Katz’s Delicatessen got a knuckle sandwich after another customer complained she was standing too close, police said.

Christal Cruz, 23, bruised the left side of the 23-year-old victim’s face after socking her on Feb. 7 at 1:10 a.m., according to the NYPD. Owner Jake Dell said the fight started when the woman bumped into Cruz while she was ordering food.

"They got into words and then a punch was thrown," he said, adding that the restaurant intervened immediately and called the police. "It got broken up really quickly."

The woman refused medical assistance at the scene, police said.

Cruz was issued a desk appearance ticket with a return date in late March, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Her attorney information was not immediately available.

Other recent crimes in the 7th Precinct include:

► A 34-year-old woman realized her $200 blue Vince Camuto bag had gone missing after hanging it on a hook at Fat Baby, located at 112 Rivington St., on Feb. 6, police said.

Police said she hung her bag at the bar at around 11:30 p.m. and turned around, standing “in the vicinity” of her belongings. When she went to retrieve her bag, it was missing, according to the NYPD.

In addition to the pricy purse, a thief also made away with the woman’s $400 gray Kate Spade wallet, Bloomingdales gift vouchers worth $400, $350 in cash, a $75 nail spa gift voucher and $50 Victoria’s Secret gift card, as well her bank cards, drivers license and house keys, police said.

Fat Baby did not immediately return a request for comment.

► A 19-year-old deliveryman injured his left elbow when another deliveryman hit him with a metal lock in the bike lane at the northeast corner of Allen and Rivington streets on Feb. 1 at 9 p.m., police said.

Police said the men, who were both on their bikes, got into a dispute before the assault occurred. The attack caused pain and bruising to the 19-year-old’s arm, according to the NYPD.

Police said the attacker was a 5-foot-9 man who weighted about 150 pounds.

► Police said Zakaria Khatan Yahya and hit a 38-year-old man during a fight at Madison Liquor at 195 Madison St. on Feb. 10 at 11:20.

The men were in a verbal dispute when Yahya took a bat from behind the counter, chased the man outside the store and struck him on his right elbow, causing pain and bruising, according to the NYPD. The man refused medical help at the scene, police said.

Yahya was charged with assault, attempted assault and harassment, according to city records. His attorney could not be reached for comment.

An employee at the store had no information about the incident. 

► A man pushed a 27-year-old woman up against the wall as she entered her Orchard Street apartment building and demanded her money on Feb. 5 at 7:20 p.m., police said.

The man took off with $100 in cash and a Metro Card worth $20. Police said the man was about 30 years old, 5-foot-8 and weighed about 200 pounds.
