HELL'S KITCHEN — A large fire broke out Wednesday night on the top floor of a five-story brick apartment building in Manhattan, fire officials said.

The blaze started in the space between the fifth floor and the roof at 412 West 46th St. a little before 6 p.m. Wednesday, FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Mike McLaughlin said at the scene.

"We started seeing smoke," said resident Anthony Manfredonia, 38, who lives on the top floor. "We started knocking on doors telling everyone to get out."

Firefighters had to break through the fifth floor ceiling and roof of the building to get to the fire.

By about 6:40 p.m. the blaze was out and there were no reported injuries, according to McLaughlin.

John Reeds could think to only grab one thing before he ran out of his home of 22 years.

"I grabbed the cat and I just ran," Reeds said about grabbing his black-and-white elderly rescue cat Abby.  "I heard people yelling 'fire' in the building."
