CITY HALL — The appointment system that the city rolled out to handle the massive demand for the new Municipal ID card went down Wednesday morning, officials said.

When New Yorkers tried to click the “Make an appointment at an Enrollment Center” link on the site, they were unable to access the system.

The city launched a new appointment-based system for the cards Wednesday at 9 a.m. following the long lines that formed at enrollment centers the day before.

It’s unclear exactly when the site went down or when it would return. It was also not clear what caused the problem.

“We are aware and are working on this issue,” a spokeswoman in the mayor's office said.

Appointments are required to get the card. You can also call 311 to make an appointment.

The IDNYC cards, which are free to city residents 14 and older, will allow New Yorkers to open bank accounts, get health care discounts and visit city attractions for free.
