QUEENS — A gunman unleashed a barrage of bullets on a Rego Park street early Tuesday morning, injuring a man who was walking out of a store with a friend, police said.

It was the first shooting incident in the neighborhood this year, police said. Investigators found a total of seven 9mm shell casings, police said.

The shooting took place around 2 a.m. near Saunders Street and 63rd Drive, a busy commercial strip, authorities said, only one block away from Queens Boulevard.

The victim, 30, whose name has not been released, told investigators that he and his friend were walking from a store and were about to meet with two other friends when a man began shooting at them from a distance, police said.

After firing multiple shots without warning, the gunman fled on foot, police said.

The victim, who was hit once in the shoulder, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.

It was not clear what sparked the incident but sources said that the gunman may have been aiming at the victim's friend who was involved in a dispute earlier.

No arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
