CROWN HEIGHTS — A Brooklyn animal rescue group and local police are trying to find out who threw an injured pit bull out of a car, running it over and leaving it for dead.

Volunteers from Sean Casey Animal Rescue say they found a female pitbull “clinging to life” Sunday night after responding to a witness who called in the tip. The witness told the group she’d seen someone throw the dog out of a car on Pacific Street between Buffalo and Rochester avenues, back over the dog’s body and drive away.

The dog was still alive when Sean Casey arrived at roughly 8:30 p.m., but he said she was in very bad shape.

“When I picked her up, the smell could have knocked you over. She smelled like she had been dead for days,” he said.

The dog, which Casey and his crew named Meadow, was covered in what looked like infected bite wounds, he said. He and his team drove her to an emergency veterinary clinic in Cobble Hill, but it was too late to save her.

“The doctors pronounced Meadow dead on arrival,” read a posting by the group on Facebook.

Officers from the 77th Precinct took a report about the incident, but have not identified any suspects in the case, police said. Casey said the witness who called did not get the license plate of the car she saw run over the dog.

“Now we’re just hoping that somebody saw something,” Casey said.

The group is asking residents in the area to report any information about Meadow to the 77th Precinct or the rescue center.

This is the second time in three months a dog has appeared to have been thrown out of a moving car in the city. In late November, a female rottweiler was found injured on Cypress Avenue in Glendale, Queens, after witnesses say they saw the dog being tossed from a vehicle inside a sleeping bag. The dog, named Dasher by rescuers, was later euthanized to “end her suffering,” the ASPCA said.
