QUEENS — A 64-year-old man died and his elderly mother was injured in a fire that ripped through a Jamaica home Monday morning, police and fire officials said.

The fire broke out about 3:40 a.m., possibly in the rear of the building at 168-37 118th Road, near Marsden Street, in South Jamaica, authorities said.

The man, who was in the basement of the single-family house, was taken to Queens General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

His 89-year-old mother, who was on the first floor, was taken to Franklin General Hospital with minor injuries. She is listed in stable condition, officials said.

A spokesman for the FDNY said that a third person refused medical attention.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of the family, officials said.

Authorities said that about 60 firefighters responded and got the blaze under control shortly after 5 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
