MANHATTAN — A homeless man near the Port Authority broke a bottle on the ground and used it to slash the head and chest of a man who wouldn't give him a cigarette Tuesday, officials said.

Candido Jerez, 47, walked up to a 57-year-old man, whose name was not released, at the corner of 41st Street and Eighth Avenue about 10:30 a.m. and asked him for a smoke, Port Authority police said.

When the man didn't give him a cigarette, Jerez broke the bottle and slashed the man's head, chest and hand, police said.

Two good Samaritans alerted two PAPD officers in the bus terminal, officials said.

The victim pointed to Jerez who was then arrested on assault and weapon possession charges, officials said.

The victim needed 80 stitches at Bellevue Hospital, officials said.

Prosecutors said Jerez was still awaiting arraignment Wednesday morning.
