ARVERNE — A man was shot in the leg and a stray bullet hit a city bus in a shooting Monday night on the Rockaway peninsula, which has seen a double-digit increase in shootings this year.

The victim, 21, was shot in the right leg near Beach 70th Street and the Rockaway Freeway at 8:20 p.m., according to the NYPD. His injuries are not life threatening, police said.

A Q22 that was driving on Beach 73rd Street and Beach Channel Drive was also hit with a bullet during the shooting, but no one on the bus was injured, according to police.

Shootings in the 100th Precinct, where the incident took place, are up 57 percent — from seven incidents last year to 11 this year — according to the most recent crime statistics, which run through Oct. 26.

Overall crime in the precinct surged 63 percent over the last five years, with the biggest increase in burglaries, which jumped 114 percent, the numbers show.
