NEW YORK CITY — The CMJ Music Marathon starts today, with more than 1,300 bands and solo artists showcasing their music to fans and industry representatvies on the hunt for fresh talent.

The festival runs from Oct. 21 to 25 at more than 80 venues around Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Meet five local acts representing New York City:

Doe Paoro from Ditmas Park
When did you decide on being a solo artist? 27. After taking a year to travel the world by myself, I needed to do something with those intense and beautiful experiences.

How do you describe your sound? It has a soulful quality, but not in the typical sense. It is a mix of electronic and sounds from nature.

What are the New York City venues you regularly play? Glasslands, Rough Trade, Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom. Some of our earlier shows were at Pianos [on the Lower East Side].

Where do you practice? When I play live, I play with a band and we have a place that we use over at the Sweatshop [rehearsal space in East Williamsburg]. I write a lot in my own apartment.

Where do you grab a drink after practice? Jessi's [Coffee Shop in Bushwick]. They have pretty good tacos.

Which local bands and musicians are you friends with or perform with? Tatiana Kochkareva. I write with her and have played in her band occasionally. Lucius. The Rosebuds. White Prism. I write music all the time with [producer] Adam Rhodes.

CMJ Schedule: She will play at 8 p.m. at Rough Trade, 64 N 9th St in Williamsburg, on Oct. 22.

Andrew Cedermark from Morningside Heights
How do you describe your sound? Loud guitar music.

Where do you practice? We practice at a place called Danbro [Studios in Bushwick]. It's a space we share with nine other bands.

Where do you grab a drink after practice? We always go to Danny’s Pizza in Bushwick. A slice of pizza and ice cold Modelo for $5 and it is really just divine.

Which other local bands and musicians are you friends with or perform with?
Liam Betson. Underwater Peoples — it’s a record label. Liquor Store. Little Big League.

CMJ Schedule: Andrew Cedermark will play on Oct. 24 at Palisades, 909 Broadway in Brooklyn, at 9 p.m.

Old Monk from Williamsburg/Bushwick
Joshua Carrafa, the guitarist, answered questions. The band also includes Ian Burns on drums and Tsugumi Takashi on bass.

When did the band form? 2010

How do you describe your sound? I usually just say we are a loud, poppy rock band.

What New York City venues do you often play: Cake Shop on the Lower East Side, Shea Stadium in East Williamsburg and Paper Box, also in East Williamsburg.

Where do you practice? We practice about once a week in a space in Bushwick we share with about four or five bands.

Where do you get a drink after practice? Cool place by our practice place is Anchored Inn Bar [in Bushwick]  and Matt Torrey's. It's a cool little beer sports bar on Bushwick Avenue.

Which other local bands or musicians are you friends with or perform with? Plates of Cake, Landlady, Black Forest, Lost Gloves.

CMJ Schedule: Old Monk will play on Oct. 25 at Paper Box, 17 Meadow Street in Brooklyn, at 8:40 p.m.

Public Speaking from Bed-Stuy
Name: Jason Anthony Harris

When did you decide to be a solo artist?  I took the name Public Speaking in early 2012 with my first EP.

How do you describe your sound? I make highly percussive music with heavy layers of digitally processed acoustic sources. I make extremely abstract music as well as more pop-oriented material, but the goal is always catharsis — especially in performance. I use electronics but produce all my sounds live using voice, found objects and other tools — no laptop. This gives me something I try to use to my advantage: immediacy.

What New York City venues do you play?  My go-to venue was always Death By Audio [in Williamsburg], but now that they're closing, I perform at Spectrum, Prospect Range, Radio Bushwick, Pianos, Palisades, Cake Shop, Panoply Performance Laboratory and more.

Where do you practice? I often work at home, but the studio allows me to exercise with volume, so it's very useful to go in and really let go. It's a luxury to have a safe place to be loud in this city.

Where do you grab a drink after practice? I'll grab a drink afterwards at 4th Avenue Pub [in Park Slope], a great bar with a staggering selection of beer.

Which other local bands and musicians are you friends with or perform with? A few members of A Bunch Of Dead People, an amazing funk, pop and prog band from the founders of Afuche. Then there's the genius of singer and pianist, Jonathan Wood Vincent.

CMJ Schedule: Public Speaking will play at Trash Bar on Oct. 22. at 8:45

Public Access TV from the East Village
John Eatherly, the front man, answers questions. The band also includes Xan Aird, Max Peebles and Pete Star.

When did the band form? The band formed eight months ago. I had been making demos by myself last summer and then figured what I want to do is put a band together and play the songs I had been doing.

How do you describe your sound? We're basically set up of two guitars with bass and drums. Rock 'n' Roll is what I would call it.

What New York City venues have you played?  Niagara, Mercury Lounge and Baby's All Right.

Where do you practice? Rivington Studios.

Where do you grab a drink after practice? We can't leave our gear at the studios so we have to drop that home first. We go to a bar near my apartment — Sly Fox, Blue and Gold Tavern or Grassroots Tavern.

CMJ Schedule: Public Access TV's first performance at CMJ is at Glasslands on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. They then play at Pianos on Oct. 25 at 3 p.m and on Oct. 25 at 10:15 p.m. at Shea Stadium.
