BRONX — Almost 6,000 cyclists will descend on The Bronx later this month for the borough's 20th annual Tour de Bronx, the state's largest free cycling event.

The ride kicks off at the Bronx County Building on 161st Street and Grand Concourse and consists of a 25-mile route, which departs at 10:40 a.m., and a 40-mile route, which leaves at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 26.

Check-in time is at 9 a.m., and cyclists can register for the ride online at tourdebronx.org or on the day of the event at the Bronx County Building.

The 25-mile route goes down from the Bronx County Building into Mott Haven and then back up through Morrisania and West Farms before crossing the Bronx River into Soundview and Throgs Neck. Riders then head north to Pelham Bay before biking over to the New York Botanical Garden to finish.

The 40-mile route follows a similar path up through Pelham Bay but then heads out to City Island and up to Wakefield before heading down via Riverdale and Marble Hill to finish at the Botanical Garden, which will host an end-of-ride festival with pizza, refreshments and live music.

"Riding in the Tour de Bronx is a healthy way to explore our borough, especially with 6,000 fellow travelers," Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. said in a statement.

Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Paul Steely White said it was "the perfect occasion to show New Yorkers that biking is not only fun and healthy but also a viable way of getting around all five boroughs."
