MIDTOWN EAST — Look both ways before crossing this street — and then look again.
The intersection of East 57th Street and Second Avenue is the most dangerous in the area — with more than 130 crashes and 19 people injured in the past two years, according to a survey by City Councilman Benjamin Kallos.
That amounts to an average of more than five collisions every month.
"This is a very busy corner," said 25-year-old Irma Payano, an employee of Pita Grill, which is located on the northwest corner of the intersection. "There's always cars going by, making tight turns, and I saw an accident between two cars just last month."
Locals say the corner is especially chaotic because of the heavy traffic rushing onto and coming off of the Queensboro Bridge at East 59th Street — as well as cars speeding and making dangerously-tight turns at the intersection in a bid to beat the light.
Kallos' survey, which was released as part of his "Liveable Streets" report, surveyed all of Council District 5, which covers the eastern portion of the Upper East Side, Roosevelt Island and parts of East Harlem and East Midtown. The survey covered February 2012 to February 2014.

Kallos said he was "already working with the Department of Transportation and NYPD to examine the street design and enforcement in these areas and make necessary improvements.”
DOT spokeswoman Bonny Tsang said "we are reviewing the report and look forward to working with the councilman's office to enhance safety in the areas [Kallos] identified."
Tsang would not detail any specific plans or changes.
The NYPD did not respond to request for comment.
In addition to the top 10 most dangerous intersections, there were 27 other dangerous intersections highlighted in the report with fewer collisions, but more fatal accidents, according to Sarah Anders, a spokeswoman for Kallos.
For example, the intersection of East 84th Street and York Avenue was included on the dangerous list because on April 11, a 22-year-old Boston College student Kelly Gordon was killed after being hit by two cabs there.
The corner of East 93rd Street and Second Avenue landed on the list because a 56-year-old woman was fatally struck by a school bus as she was crossing on Aug. 29.
“These particular accidents drew our attention,” Anders said, adding that the East 93rd Street crash happened near their office. "It was really tragic.”
