Woman Fatally Struck While Crossing Canal Street, Police Say

LOWER EAST SIDE — A woman was killed when a van hit her while she was crossing Canal Street early Tuesday morning, police said.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was walking north across the busy roadway at Elizabeth Street about 4 a.m. when a westbound 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee hit her, according to the NYPD.

She was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The driver, a 64-year-old man whose name was not released, remained on the scene and was not immediately arrested, according to the NYPD.

Police said their investigation was ongoing.
