UPPER EAST SIDE — A man walking with a cane was seriously injured while crossing an Upper East Side street when a Coca-Cola delivery truck hit him Friday afternoon, officials and witnesses said.

The 86-year-old man, whose identity was not released, was walking westbound when he was knocked under the side of the truck as it made a right turn from East 96th Street onto Third Avenue about 1:30 p.m., according to the FDNY and witnesses.

People quickly gathered around the bleeding man as he lay under the truck, according to Edwin Rios, 55, who was about to pray at a nearby temple when the man was hit.

"They took his false teeth out. Then all the blood came out. He was in pain," Rios said.

The man was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell hospital where he was undergoing surgery, police and FDNY spokesmen said.

Andrea Karshan, 39, was standing near the intersection when the accident happened and said she heard the impact.

"The thud was so loud," Karshan said. "Women were screaming."

He left a puddle of blood below the truck which stayed on the scene.

An NYPD spokesman did not immediately have further information.
