ST. GEORGE — Borough President James Oddo has appointed a former principal as his new director of education.

Rose Kerr, who was head of the Staten Island School of Civic Leadership in Mariners Harbor, will help develop new ideas and proposals for education in the borough and serve as a liaison between Oddo and the Department of Education, Oddo announced Wednesday.

"It’s clear to me that we need a perspective on staff that only an educator can bring,” Oddo said.

“Rose Kerr brings the passion and knowledge we were looking for. We’re doing great work now, but we know we can do even better by bringing her onto our team.”

While Kerr was at the Staten Island School of Civic Leadership, the school was the highest-ranking elementary, middle school and pre-K in the city, Oddo said.

She has also previously served as the assistant principal of Egbert Intermediate School and P.S. 22 and received numerous education awards for her work, including a New York Urban League Education Award.

“I’m thrilled to work with someone who has the vision for schools and education that the borough president does,” Kerr said.
