THE BRONX — NYPD officers shot a gunman Monday afternoon after he charged at them wielding a .22 caliber firearm, police said.

The officers were patrolling near East 145th Street and College Avenue in Mott Haven about 5:44 p.m. when they saw a 20-year-old man shooting a gun a block away.

The gave chase, but the man ran toward them with his gun trained pointed in their direction.

One of the officers opened fire, hitting him in the elbow, police said.

The suspect, who did not open fire, dropped his gun and ran into nearby 414 Morris Ave., in the Patterson Houses, where they caught up to him and put him in handcuffs, according to the NYPD.

He was listed in stable condition at Lincoln Hospital, police said.

Police were withholding the suspect's name until he was formally arrested, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

It was not clear if the suspect shot anyone in the leadup to the confrontation with police.

Along with the .22 he used Monday night, police recovered another gun of his, a .380 caliber firearm in an apartment. It was not clear if he lived there.
