LOWER EAST SIDE — A thief wearing an Ohio State University hoodie robbed a sleeping subway passenger of his iPhone 5 early Saturday morning — then threatened to cut the victim when he awoke and got angry at the mugger, police said.

The victim, a 31-year-old man, was traveling on a northbound D train, when the suspect reached into his pants pocket and removed the cellphone about 4:50 a.m. Sept. 20, according to the NYPD.

The man woke up and confronted the thief, demanding that he give his phone back, police said, but the suspect threatened to cut him. The suspect fled the car when it arrived at the Grand Street station, according to the NYPD.

Police described the thief as a mustached man who stands about 5-foot-10. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with an Ohio State Buckeyes logo on the front and blue jeans, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
