MIDTOWN EAST — Nearly 140 firefighters battled a blaze inside the ductwork of a Second Avenue building, damaging six apartments and sending a massive column of smoke into the sky Wednesday evening, witnesses and fire officials said.

The fire erupted at 919 Second Ave., near East 49th Street, at 7:12 p.m. and quickly spread throughout the ducts of the four-story building, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

Six apartments were affected before the 138 firefighters who responded were able to quell the flames about 8:30 p.m., the spokeswoman said.

No injuries were reported.

Fire marshals were still investigating the cause of the fire, FDNY officials said.
