Friday, September 19
With the New York Film Festival just around the corner — it commences September 26 — the Film Society Lincoln Center invites you view the Festival’s past triumphs by diving deep into its back catalogs in NYFF Opening Acts. Showing this evening is David Fincher’s 2007 procedural drama "Zodiac" (9 p.m.) and the gritty 2004 Argentinian drama, "Los Muertos" at 6:45 p.m., which also includes a Q&A with the film’s director, Lisandro Alonso. The film series runs through September 25 at Walter Reade Theater, 165 West 65th Street, Upper West Side. Individual films $13.

The inaugural Yes the Bronx Film Festival kicks off this evening with a screening of 1942 baseball flick starring Gary Cooper, “The Pride of the Yankees.” Two short films complete tonight’s program, “Artistic Energy: The Bronx” about the Bronx Artist Documentary Project and “Green Bronx Machine,” a short film on urban farming in the Bronx. From 7 p.m., at the Lovinger Theater at Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx. $15.

Saturday, September 20
TKOs and Timbales is an program of events looking at the artistic intersection of boxing and music. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. with a panel discussion that brings together a boxer and club owner, music critic and scholar. The afternoon also features a boxing demonstration (3 p.m.) and a screening of the award-winning 1996 documentary "When We Were Kings" followed by a Q&A with director Leon Gast (4 p.m.). The day is capped off with a  concert from Bronx’s Latin music star Orlando Marin kicking off at 7 p.m. At BMHC Lab, 1303 Louis Niñé Blvd., Bronx and across the street at El Maestro, 1300 Southern Blvd., Bronx. All events are free.

Obscura Society NY invites you “Inside the Holographer's Laboratory." It's an opportunity to get behind the scenes in master holographer Jason Sapan's labyrinthine Midtown laser laboratory. Jason Sapan was involved with the first public exhibition of holography in America during the 1960s and has created holographic portraits of Andy Warhol, Bill Clinton, and Isaac Asimov. The guided tour offers the opportunity to engage with lifelike holographic sculptures and includes a trip down to Sapan's laser laboratory for a demonstration on holography and a chance to observe laser physics in action. From 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., 240 East 26th Street, Midtown. $25, bookings essential.

Sunday, September 21
World Maker Faire is part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new: a collaborative environment teeming with 700 exhibiting “makers,” aka tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. Held on the site of the New York World's Fair of 1964, the weekend features hundreds of presentations (such as Bringing New Life to an Old Spacecraft at 1 p.m. Saturday), lectures (like Wearable Electronics: Let’s Make it Together at 11 a.m. Sunday) and even a drone flying competition featuring aerial combat and obstacle courses with divisions for tiny palm-sized toys up to huge multirotor heavy-lifters. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Book lovers will be converging in Brooklyn Sunday for the Brooklyn Book Festival, the largest free literary event in New York City. Hundreds of festival events cover the gamut of literary-related activities, from kid’s books, comics and self-help, through to libraries, digital publishing and non-fiction. Meet authors, discover interesting new books and participate in passionate discussions with some of the smartest people in New York City. From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Brooklyn Borough Hall and Plaza, 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn.
