FLATIRON — Massive bronze sculptures are taking root in Madison Square Park next week, allowing visitors to walk around and under them.

The series of abstract sculptures called “Walk of Life” will be displayed on three lawns in the park from Sept. 18 through Feb. 8, the Madison Square Park Conservancy announced.

The structures, created by British artist Tony Cragg and each standing about 20 feet tall, appear as though they're made of liquid rock that's been hardened into various shapes.

“Cragg makes bronze an energetic, dynamic material with a fluidity that pushes the very properties of that material,” said Brooke Kamin Rapaport, senior curator at the Madison Square Park Conservancy.

One part of the series, called Points of View, is made up of three columns, each about 23 feet tall, which will be located in a cluster on the oval lawn. The second is an 18-foot-tall knot of golden bronze called Mixed Feelings that will go on the north lawn. The last, called Caldera, creates a 16-foot bridge shape over the west gravel area, where visitors can walk underneath it, according to the conservancy.

“I think that sculpture is kind of sensitizing activity and that it has a role in being a catalyst that may lead to more sensitive thinking,” Craig said in a statement. “It’s a materialist’s tool, which I would hope would also lead to a more open-minded approach to the world around us.”
