UPPER WEST SIDE — A 73-year-old woman was in critical condition after being struck by a car while crossing West End Avenue at West 90th Street Sunday night, police said.

The Upper West Side resident was walking west across the avenue without the walk signal when an 87-year-old man driving a 2008 Nissan struck her about 7:55 p.m. as he headed north, police said.

The woman was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with severe head trauma, police said.

The driver remained on the scene and police did not immediately suspect criminality, an NYPD spokesman said.

Earlier this year, two pedestrians were killed along West End Avenue in separate incidents at West 97th and West 95th streets.

Over the past two years, there were 50 crashes in which a pedestrian was injured on the avenue and two crashes where a pedestrian died, according to NYPD data.

The DOT agreed to a redesign of West End Avenue, including the addition of four pedestrian islands. The agency will also create a dedicated turning lane and reduce the through traffic lanes down to only two lanes.

Community Board 7 approved the redesign plans at its Sept. 2 full board meeting, with construction beginning this month, the DOT promised.
