INWOOD — An urgent care center is on the way to the neighborhood.

Mount Sinai Hospital plans to open the only urgent care facility in the area later this year on the ground floor of Inwood Center at 5030 Broadway.

The center will treat patients with non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses that require immediate care. Patients will be able to seek care without waiting in a long line at an emergency room or waiting to make an appointment with a primary care doctor.

The closest urgent care center now is located on 181st Street near Audubon Avenue in Washington Heights.

“The center will be overseen by the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice and feature full-time Mount Sinai physicians and staff, all of whom look forward to bringing Mount Sinai's brand of high-quality health care to northern Manhattan," said Mount Sinai spokesman Sid Dinsay in an email.

Mount Sinai did not provide operating hours of the new center, but the hospital's similar facilities on the Upper West Side and in Brooklyn Heights are both open until at least 8:30 p.m. on weeknights and offer weekend hours.

Mount Sinai has not announced an opening date for the center.

"We definitely need it," said Manuel Ramirez, owner of Inwood's Dichter Pharmacy. "Just by looking at the Inwood Kids [Yahoo group] page, you constantly see people asking if there is an urgent care center or a doctor who is open on Saturdays and Sundays. I think it's wonderful."

In addition to the urgent care center, the 370,000-square-foot mixed-use Inwood Center will also host a facility for United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, which will offer services for adults with disabilities, officials said.

The facility will be the organization's first in Washington Heights or Inwood, a spokeswoman said. It will open when renovations are complete.

The City University of New York, Royal Pharmacy and Manhattan Mini Storage also lease space in Inwood Center.
