MANHATTAN — Five Manhattan men were arrested Wednesday and charged in the death of a Hamilton Heights man who was fatally shot in the head right outside his own apartment building Tuesday night, police said.

Wayne Harris, 23, shot Daryl Washington, 27, during a dispute outside the victim's home at 501 West 144th St., near Amsterdam Avenue, just before 11 p.m., the NYPD said.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not clear what Harris and Washington were fighting about, but police said that the two had known each other beforehand.

Harris was arrested Wednesday and faced charges of murder, weapon possession, criminal use of a firearm, reckless endangerment and gang assault, the NYPD said.

Harris, who also lived in Hamilton Heights, was arrested nine days before the shooting for having marijuana in a public place and trying to destroy it, court records show. He was given three days of community service and released, records show.

The four others who were arrested on gang assault charges in connection to the shooting included John Arias, 23, Thaddaeus Burkett, 20, Dayvon Pinkney, 22 and Travis Robinson, 23, police said.

Arias, who lived in Washington Heights, was previously arrested on Feb. 15 for trespassing in public housing, court records show.
