THE BRONX — A driver died when his car split into two pieces after slamming into an elevated subway pillar in Fordham Thursday morning, police said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was driving a Lexus north on Jerome Avenue about 2:15 a.m. when he crashed into the metal pillar between East 196th Street and Morris Avenue, police said.

Photos of the accident show the car split in two with the rear lying in the middle of the street with its front section down the block propped up on some parked cars.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
