GRAMERCY — Police were still searching Monday morning for the violent attacker who punched an off-duty NYPD detective in the head Saturday evening in a Park Avenue subway station.

The assault occurred about 6:20 p.m. Saturday, when the attacker punched the 29-year-old detective on the southbound 6 train platform at 23rd Street and Park Avenue, police said.

The detective fell, struck his head on the platform and suffered a severe head injury, the NYPD said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

The suspect, who was with two women at the time, fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said.

He is described as in his early 40s, about 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans at the time of the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
