INWOOD — Dozens of lights recently went out in a section of Fort Tryon Park that has recently been the site of muggings and an attempted rape.

About 25 lights went out in the park's northern section, many of which line the path leading to the Anne Loftus playground near the Cloisters, officials and locals said.

A spokesman from the Department of Transportation, which oversees the lights, said the agency is aware of the issue and that a contractor is working to replace a defective cable. About half of the 25 lights have since been repaired, the spokesman added.

Inwood resident Katherine O’Sullivan tried calling 311 after she encountered the darkened path twice this week.

“I came down early from my walk because I didn’t want to be stuck in the dark,” she said. “The path is very uneven and the visibility was bad. It’s dangerous.”

In early June, a pair of teenage girls mugged two people in Fort Tryon Park after threatening them with scissors. About a week later, a man attempted to sexually assault a woman in one of the park’s bathrooms. Both of the incidents took place during the day.
