CROWN HEIGHTS — It will be months before you can see a show or grab a drink at Global Square, the multi-use art and performance space coming to an old parking garage on Dean Street.

But twice a month, you can see exactly what’s going on inside.

Every other Saturday, members of the new venue's artistic team lead tours of the 7,000-square-foot space between Classon and Franklin avenues to show curious artists and neighborhood residents what’s coming.

“We’re merging multiple art spaces with different capacities and a restaurant and a bar and, on top of all that, this common space,” said Sydney Freggiaro, director of communications at Global Square.

“So, it’s a big idea… [We want to] get people used to our vision and the kind of experiences they can have.”

Global Square will host musical performances, dance, film and visual art exhibits, plus a bar and pizza shop. But, for now, it’s a construction site.

“There is a floor now,” Freggiaro said with a laugh. “We were doing tours without floors for a while.”

The tour itself is about 20 minutes long, then Freggiaro and Global Square's artistic director Hassan Christopher will lead the group to the nearby bar The Saint Catherine to answer questions and have discussions.

“Because we’re open to cross-disciplinary [art] … we want to know what kinds of things they [artists] are going to need in the space,” she said. Previous conversations included debate about audio equipment, inquiries about whether a piano fits in the space (it does) and, for dancers, the strength of the floors.

“Hassan and I are available for two hours to discuss possibilities,” she said.

If artists or interested parties can’t get to the tour, the Global Square team has an open call for submissions on its website for future exhibits, shows or installations.

A Global Square tour will take place on Saturday, July 12 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 893 Dean St. Attendees should RSVP by email to info@gsquare.org. Subsequent tours will be arranged every other Saturday, with the next one planned for July 26.
