RED HOOK — The owner of neighborhood fitness studio Red Hook Pilates has launched an online fundraiser to purchase new equipment and support the center.

Jen Nelson opened the waterfront studio at 414 Van Brunt St. late last year with mat Pilates classes, yoga, massage therapy and series of classes exclusively for men called “Guy-lates” or “Dude-lates.”

Through her GoFundMe page, Nelson is hoping to raise $15,000, which would allow her to buy $12,000 worth of Pilates equipment and add new classes next year.

The machines include four “Tower” units for small group or semi-private sessions and a “Reformer” for private classes.

“It’s another step to working with Pilates from the mat,” said Nelson, adding that the machines add resistance and alignment to the workout.

Nelson is hoping the money raised will also help keep the studio afloat.

While Nelson will be teaching a few additional classes, a little financial support will get her through the summer, she said.

“Every little bit helps,” Nelson said.

To thank donors, the studio is offering some rewards, which include free group, semi-private and private sessions.

Nelson is hoping to purchase the equipment by the end of the year so new classes can begin in 2015.
