BRONX — A truck driver from Massachusetts was killed Wednesday morning when a manhole cover flipped into his cab on the Cross Bronx Expressway, sparking a horrific accident, police said.

The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. near the Cross Bronx Expressway and Jerome Avenue, where the manhole cover crashed through the front windshield of a tractor trailer driven by Jose Duran, 35, of Springfield, Mass., the NYPD said.

Investigators believe the manhole cover was knocked into the air by a different vehicle, after which it crashed through Duran's windshield, sources said. It was not clear which vehicle was involved.

The cover hit Duran in the head and caused his truck to collide with another truck driven by a 31-year-old man, police said.

Duran was pinned inside his vehicle and removed by the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he died of his injuries, police noted.

The driver of the second truck escaped the crash unharmed.

An investigation into the crash was ongoing, but it appears to be an accident, police said.
