BROOKLYN — A woman died and nine others were injured when a fire broke out inside an East New York apartment at the Unity Plaza Houses Monday morning, officials said.

The 59-year-old woman, whose name was not immediately released, was inside the apartment when flames erupted about 3 a.m. at 390 Georgia Ave., near Blake Avenue, according to the NYPD and FDNY.

She was taken to Brookdale Hospital and pronounced dead, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The city's medical examiner's office will determine her cause of death.

Another man was taken to the same hospital in critical condition, police said.

The FDNY said another person was seriously hurt, but in stable condition, while six others, including one firefighter, were treated for minor injuries.

The NYPD couldn't confirm the fire department's injury count.

About 60 firefighters brought the fire under control about an hour after it started, the FDNY said.

Fire marshals are still investigating what sparked the blaze.
