BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Construction on Nostrand Avenue in Bed-Stuy will finally come to an end this June after more than two years of work, according to the city.

The $17.5 million project, on Nostrand between Atlantic and Flushing avenues, helped usher in the B44 Select Bus Service on Nostrand Avenue in November, and replaced infrastructure like water mains, hydrants, curbs, sidewalks and traffic lights, according to the city Department of Design and Construction.

The construction project has closed down segments of the street for the duration of the work, reducing one-way traffic from two lanes to one.

The B44 service is the sixth Select Bus Service route in the city, and the first in Brooklyn, running from Williamsburg to Sheepshead Bay and serving more than 44,000 riders daily, according to city the Department of Transportation. The service lets riders purchase tickets before getting on the bus, with the goal of improving speed and reliability along the route.

Also included in the project are new bioswales — roadside planters designed to absorb water runoff and alleviate overflow into the East River, according to the city.

The 11 new bioswales are similar to those being installed in Bed-Stuy to help clean up Newtown Creek, a spokesman for the city Department of Environmental Protection said.
