MANHATTAN — A woman tried to pry an 8-month-old boy in a stroller from his nanny on a Chelsea street by claiming to be his mother Thursday afternoon, sources said.

The woman, who policed identified as Tara Anne McDonald, 46, accosted the tot and his caretaker outside 140 Eighth Ave., near 17th Street, about 3:45 p.m., the NYPD said.

McDonald tried to yank the boy away from the nanny and was claiming that he was hers, sources said.

The tug-of-war continued until a nearby UPS worker intervened and McDonald fled down Eighth Avenue, sources said.

The nanny returned home to notify the boy's parents, who in turn called the police, sources said. No injuries were reported.

Police said McDonald was previously arrested for attempted kidnapping and assault of a police officer, but could not provide additional details.

She is described as 5-foot-9-inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, and had not been found by police as of Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
