UPPER WEST SIDE — Three young children were among the dozens of people evacuated from Equinox gym on Amsterdam Avenue Wednesday morning after a fire broke out inside a second-floor dryer, FDNY officials said.

About 78 firefighters battled the blaze at 344 Amsterdam Ave., near 76th Street, which started just before 11 a.m. and was not brought under control until more than an hour later, fire officials sad.

A couple dozen people were evacuated, officials said.

''Smoke started spreading all over the second floor,” said Madeline Caraballo, 24, who was in the basement teaching a class with kids at the time.

''It was white smoke. It was a little scary because it was so unexpected, but we gathered the kids and the Fire Department came quickly.''

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, FDNY officials said.

The cause was under investigation.
