CROWN HEIGHTS — A Crown Heights man wanted for escaping from the back of a police car on Monday is still on the loose, police say.

Darnell Thomas, 27, was being transported from a Prospect Heights stationhouse to court in Downtown Brooklyn when police say he got out of a marked patrol car at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and South Portland Avenue, about a block east of the Barclays Center.

According to police, he was handcuffed at the time he escaped. How he escaped, and whether the police car was locked, was still under investigation, the NYPD said.

Police in Crown Heights have distributed wanted flyers for Thomas, whose last known address is on St. Johns Place between Troy and Schenectady avenues.

Thomas was originally arrested for punching a window at the al-Marwan deli at the corner of St. Johns and Schenectady Avenue in December of 2013, police say. He faced one charge of criminal mischief for that incident and will face additional charges related to his escape if he is caught.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Darnell Thomas should contact Det. Adam McLawhorn at 718-735-0610.
