Thief Stealing Checks from Mailboxes in Forest Hills, Police Say
QUEENS — A thief has been stealing checks from mailboxes in Forest Hills and altering their amounts before cashing them in, police said.
So far, police said, eight incidents have been reported, starting Dec. 29, 2013. The most recent incident was reported on March 22. Several victims live around Yellowstone Boulevard, authorities said.
In one case the amount was altered from about $150 to about $950, police said.
After depositing the checks into an account, the man would withdraw the money from ATMs, police said.
