QUEENS — A woman fought off a man who pounced on her from behind and tried to rape her in Astoria early Sunday morning, police said.

The 22-year-old victim was walking along 30th Avenue at 3:25 a.m. when the suspect approached her from behind, shoved her to the ground and tried to rape her, the NYPD said.

But the woman fought back, sending the suspect fleeing, police said.

She suffered cuts and scratches, but refused medical attention, the NYPD said.

Investigators released a surveillance photo of the suspect who had dark hair and was wearing a jacket with brightly colored shoulders and a darker-colored torso.

He was in his early 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches, and approximately 145 pounds, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
