RED HOOK — The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is hoping to open a middle school in Red Hook, according to officials.
"The Harbor School is deeply interested in recruiting Brooklyn students and as such we're looking at establishing a feeder middle school in Red Hook," said Murray Fisher, president of the New York Harbor Foundation, which supports the Governors Island high school.
The public school based on Governors Island was founded in 2003 and teaches ninth to 12th graders, providing a “unique, on-water learning experience for all its students,” the school's website says.
The middle school project is still in the exploratory stage and is years away from potentially being created, he said.
The proposed Red Hook school would send middle schoolers to the Governors Island high school. The school currently draws students from all five boroughs.
In addition to offering traditional coursework in English, math and science, students at the school enroll in one of six career and technical education programs based in marine science or technology, like aquaculture, marine biology research, ocean engineering and scientific diving.
In July, the Harbor School hosted an “Oyster Restoration Program” in Red Hook that taught students about the history and biology of the shellfish, plus their value to the water.
