RED HOOK — A Brooklyn couple will soon open the neighborhood’s only Thai restaurant, serving authentic cuisine along with familiar favorites.

Carlos Padillo and Kanlaya Supachana, who live in Park Slope, plan to open “Kao Soy” on Van Brunt Street between Pioneer Street and Visitation Place in October.

Supachana, who is originally from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, has been managing Thai restaurants in Brooklyn for 15 years, she said.

Kao Soy — which means curry noodles — is a famous dish in her hometown.

The menu will feature Thai food favorites such as pad thai as well as dishes from Supachana’s far east home, including homemade ice-cream and Thai sausages, made using her father’s recipe.

The home-style restaurant will also offer delivery and take-out, said Padillo, a contractor who grew up in Red Hook, just down the street from the restaurant’s new Van Brunt Street space.

“The customer wants to know real Thai,” Padillo said. “American Thai food is not Thai-Thai food.”

A Yelp search for Thai restaurants in Red Hook finds the closest eateries to be Pok Pok Ny and Teeda Thai Cuisine in the Columbia Waterfront District.

The restaurant, located at a former check-cashing space, will feature a full bar and will seat about 30 people.
